Ginger Honey
Ginger honey is a popular home choice for a cough, especially in winter. The part with the most research behind it is the honey. Honey can help ease short-term cough symptoms in adults and children over one year old. Ginger adds warmth and flavour, but there is very little research on ginger honey itself for coughs.
Bee Base offers Ginger Honey, Tulsi Honey and Clove Honey. They are made with honey from our own hives, filtered and batch tested. They are food products, not medicines, and a cough that is severe or lasts a long time needs a doctor.
For a short-term cough caused by a cold or similar infection, honey is one of the self-care options suggested by NICE, the UK health guidance body, for anyone over one year old. NICE notes that the evidence for this is limited, but it points to some benefit for relieving cough symptoms.
Most of the research has been carried out in children. A Cochrane review found that honey probably reduces cough symptoms more than a placebo when given for up to three days, and helps children and parents sleep better at night than no treatment. There is less evidence for adults.
Honey does not cure a cold or clear an infection. It may simply make a cough more comfortable while your body recovers.
Our Process: Freshness in Every Step
Bee Base keeps its own bee hives, so production happens under our supervision.
We move our hives to areas where crops are in bloom.
We collect only the extra honey the colony has stored.
Our honey comes from bee rearing, without burning or heavily smoking the hives.
The honey is filtered to remove wax particles, a sample from each batch goes to a third-party, FSSAI-nominated laboratory, and our honey is NMR tested.
Ginger is a common ingredient in Indian home remedies for coughs and colds. It gives honey a warm, spicy taste that many people find soothing in a hot drink. Research on ginger honey specifically for coughs is very limited, so the benefit you can count on comes mainly from the honey.
If you have diabetes, remember that honey contains natural sugars. Ask your doctor before using it regularly.
See a doctor rather than relying on honey if:
Tulsi, or holy basil, is found in many Indian homes and has a long place in traditional remedies. Tulsi honey combines that familiar herbal flavour with honey.
What you can realistically expect from tulsi honey:
You may see tulsi honey advertised as boosting immunity or preventing illness. There is no reliable evidence that tulsi honey does either, so it is best enjoyed as a flavourful honey rather than a health treatment.
Warm and spicy, with a noticeable ginger kick. Good in tea, warm lemon water or on its own by the spoon.
Herbal and aromatic. A favourite in warm water and in fresh lemonade.
Rich and strongly aromatic. Works well in masala chai, spiced drinks and winter desserts.
A few simple checks can help you pick honey you can trust:
It should show honey and the named ingredient, such as ginger or tulsi, with no sugar syrup or artificial flavouring.
A good brand will tell you whether it uses fresh ginger, dried ginger, tulsi leaves or an extract.
Look for honey from a known producer with independent lab testing.
Be cautious of any honey sold as a cough cure or immunity booster. Honey can ease cough symptoms, but it is not a medicine.
Both contain honey, which is the ingredient with evidence for easing short-term cough symptoms. There is no good research showing that one works better than the other, so choose the flavour you prefer.
Children over one year old can have honey. Some children find ginger too spicy, so start with a small amount. Never give any honey to babies under 12 months.
Many people do, but check with a pharmacist first, especially for children. Some cough syrups already contain sugar or honey, and not all medicines suit every age.
It is better to let the water cool slightly first. Very hot water changes honey’s taste and aroma.
Honey is fine as part of your normal diet. If a cough has not improved after three weeks, see a doctor rather than continuing home care.
