Ajwain Honey
Ajwain Honey: Bold, Herbal Honey from Ajwain Flowers
Ajwain honey is a strong-flavoured honey that bees make from the nectar of ajwain (carom) flowers. It has a herbal, slightly spicy aroma that sets it apart from mild everyday honey. At Bee Base, our Ajwain honey is raw and only filtered before packing. A sample from each batch is tested at a third-party, FSSAI-nominated laboratory, and our honey is NMR tested.
Many people look for ajwain honey because ajwain seeds are a familiar digestive remedy in Indian kitchens. Below, we explain how the honey relates to the spice, how it tastes, how to use it, and what research does and does not show.
What is ajwain honey?
Ajwain honey is a single-flower honey. The ajwain plant is the same plant whose seeds are used as a spice. When ajwain crops are in flower, bees collect nectar from the blossoms and turn it into honey.
The honey comes from the flower’s nectar, not from the seeds. A jar of ajwain honey does not contain ajwain seeds, so it should not be treated as a substitute for the spice.
Our Process: Freshness in Every Step
How Bee Base produces its honey
Our own hives
Bee Base keeps its own bee hives, so production happens under our supervision rather than being bought in and repacked.
Hives that move with the crops
Our beekeepers move the hives to areas where the next crop is flowering, so the bees have fresh nectar nearby.
Surplus only
We collect only the extra honey the colony has stored, leaving the bees what they need.
No fire or dense smoke
Our honey comes from bee rearing. We never burn hives or use heavy smoke on colonies.
Filtered, then packed
After harvest, the honey is filtered to remove wax particles. There is no other processing.
Batch tested
A sample from every batch goes to a third-party, FSSAI-nominated laboratory, and our honey is NMR tested.
What does ajwain honey taste like?
Ajwain honey has a distinctive flavour. It is sweet with a sharp, herbal edge, and many people notice a faint spiciness in the aroma. Its colour tends to be amber or darker than mild everyday honeys.
Like other raw honeys, ajwain honey can thicken or crystallise over time, especially in cool weather. This is natural. To soften it, place the closed jar in warm water for a while.
Does ajwain or fennel honey help with digestion?
There is no reliable evidence that ajwain honey or fennel honey improves digestion..
Ajwain seeds have a long history in Indian home remedies, which is why the idea is so popular. However, the honey is made from the plant’s flower nectar, and the seeds never go into it.
Research on ajwain honey itself is very limited. One laboratory study examined three ajwain honey samples from the Western Ghats. It confirmed their flower source through pollen analysis and measured antioxidant and other properties in cell tests. That research was carried out in a laboratory, not in people, and it did not study digestion.
Enjoy ajwain honey for its flavour. If you have ongoing acidity, bloating or other digestive problems, speak to a doctor rather than relying on any honey.
How to use ajwain honey
Ajwain honey’s herbal taste works especially well with savoury and warm flavours:
- Stirred into warm water with lemon once the water has cooled slightly
- Added to ginger tea or masala chai
- Drizzled on hot parathas or rotis
- Whisked into dressings with lemon juice and black pepper
- Brushed on paneer, vegetables or chicken as a glaze near the end of cooking
- Served with cheese, nuts or roasted makhana
What to check when buying ajwain honey
A few simple checks can help you pick honey you can trust:
The flower source
Ask how the honey is produced. Single-flower honey should come from bees foraging mainly on that plant.
Pollen analysis
Some brands test their honey's pollen to confirm the flower source. If available, this is the clearest proof that honey is truly ajwain honey.
The ingredient list
Pure ajwain honey should list honey as its only ingredient. If ajwain seeds or extract are listed, it is flavoured honey, which is a different product.
Independent testing
Look for third-party lab testing and NMR testing, not just a "pure" label.
Health promises
Be cautious of honey sold as a cure for digestive problems. The evidence does not support that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ajwain honey made from ajwain seeds?
No. Bees make ajwain honey from the nectar of ajwain flowers. The seeds are not part of the honey.
Why does ajwain honey taste stronger than regular honey?
The taste of honey depends on the flowers the bees visit. Ajwain flowers give the honey its herbal, slightly sharp character, while honey from mixed flowers is usually milder.
Can I have ajwain honey every day?
Most healthy adults can enjoy a small amount of honey as part of a balanced diet. Honey still contains natural sugars, so if you have diabetes or are watching your sugar intake, ask your doctor how much suits you.
Does Bee Base Ajwain honey contain added sugar?
No. Our Ajwain honey has no added sugar or syrup. It is filtered and packed, and each batch is tested.
Can children eat ajwain honey?
Children over one year old can have honey. Do not give any honey, including ajwain honey, to babies under 12 months.
What is the difference between ajwain honey and fennel honey?
Ajwain honey has a strong, sharp and herbal taste. Fennel honey is milder, with a sweet aroma similar to saunf. Choose ajwain for bold flavour and fennel for a gentler one.
